Turlock, California (June 3, 2021) – Luis Torres Perez, 21 of Delhi, and Emily Garcia, 20 of Turlock, were hospitalized Tuesday night after being involved in a deadly fiery head-on crash in Turlock.

The incident began at around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, when authorities received reports regarding a wrong-way driver.

A caller told the California Highway Patrol officers that a red Ford Focus was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, just north of Lander Avenue.

According to the CHP, officers found a man lying on the steering wheel of the Ford facing the wrong way on Highway 99 near Full Cars Road.

When the officers tried to get his attention by knocking on the window of the Ford, the driver, later identified as Marvin Hernandez, 44, suddenly accelerated, overtook them and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado before striking the center divider.

Driver Killed in Turlock Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 99 Identified

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perez, who was the driver of the Chevrolet, sustained minor injuries while the passenger, Garcia, had major injuries. Both were taken to Modesto hospitals.

The crash prompted the closure of southbound lanes of Highway 99 between Fulkerth and Main Street.

Authorities said alcohol played a role in the collision.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the CHP.
