National City, California (June 3, 2021) – Authorities have identified the elderly pedestrian who died after being struck by a hit-and-run motorist more than two months ago in National City as Leonardo Alcantara, 81.

The accident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. on March 17 on East Eighth Street near the Interstate 805 underpass.

According to the authorities, Alcantara was walking north across East 8th Street when he was hit by a vehicle traveling westbound.

Alcantara was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver involved did not stop to render aid to the pedestrian and fled the scene. Police described the suspect vehicle as a dark blue or dark gray 2012- 2015 Chevrolet Malibu or Chevrolet Cruze and had minimal front-end damage.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to contact the National City Police Department at (619) 336-4475 or the Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

A reward of up to $1,000 is available for anyone who provides information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
