Newport Beach, California (December 9, 2020) – Henry Eduardo Saldana-Mejia, 27, of Santa Ana, has been identified as one of the two persons who were killed in a Tuesday evening DUI crash that left three children critically injured in Newport Beach, police said.

The deadly two-vehicle accident happened at about 7:45 p.m., on December 9, on Newport Coast Drive, a steep road that goes by Pelican Hill Resort.

According to the authorities, a Range Rover, driven by Grace Elizabeth Coleman, 22, of Newport Beach, collided with Saldana-Mejia’s vehicle on the roadway in unclear circumstances.

Sadly, Saldana-Mejia and his wife sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

The couple’s children, ages 1, 3 and 5, were critically injured and were hospitalized for treatment. They were the back seat passengers.

The couple was reportedly on their way to pick up Saldana’s last paycheck at a resort at Pelican Hill, where he had recently been working in housekeeping.

Coleman fled the scene on foot and was taken into custody a short distance away. She was booked on suspicion of murder, DUI causing bodily injury and hit-and-run resulting in death, the police said.

Coleman was also hospitalized, but police did not disclose the extent of her injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
