Trinity County, California (April 15, 2021) – Authorities have identified the driver who died Saturday morning after his vehicle plunged into the Trinity River in Trinity County as Ed Moreno, 52, of Big Bar.

The deadly crash happened at about 8:14 a.m. Saturday, April 10, on Highway 299 between Big Bar and Big Flat.

Moreno was driving a 2005 Jeep Cherokee westbound on Highway 299 at an unspecified speed when the right tires of the Jeep veered onto the north gravel shoulder, the CHP report states.

Moreno over-corrected toward the left and the Jeep went across the eastbound lane. The Jeep then plunged into the Trinity River near the north shore.

Moreno died at the scene.

It is undetermined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
