Costa Mesa, California (September 6, 2020) – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday morning in Costa Mesa, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The deadly pedestrian crash happened at about 6:53 a.m. at the intersection of Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue.

The CHP said a Newport Beach woman was walking her dog through the intersection inside a crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle that was heading southbound on Irvine Avenue.

The driver involved, identified as Ali Zohair Fakhreddine, 31, reportedly ran a red light and hit the pedestrian and the dog.

Deadly Pedestrian Crash at Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue in Costa Mesa

The woman and the dog died at the scene. 

Fakhreddine did not stop to render aid to the victims and fled the scene. Authorities later found him with his 2014 Hyundai about three hours later. The vehicle had damage consistent with the collision.

Fakhreddine was eventually arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
