Contra Costa County, California (February 9, 2019) – One person was killed when a small plane crashed Friday night in Contra Costa County, authorities said.

The deadly accident was reported at around 2:41 p.m. Saturday, but authorities said it occurred Friday, February 8 on Mt. Diablo.

For reasons still under investigation, the single-engine Mooney M20 crashed into a hillside two miles southwest of the mountain’s peak, according to the authorities,.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, was flying from Hayward to Lincoln, California. A family member of the pilot reported the aircraft was overdue after it had not landed as scheduled.

First responders found the wreckage near Summit Road, where the aircraft burned after crashing.

The pilot was killed in the crash. The name of the deceased victim has not been disclosed pending identification and notification of family.

The crash remains under investigation by the FAA and NTSB.
