Santa Rosa, California (February 17, 2020) – Two CHP officers identified as Russell Smith and Mitchell Perez were injured after a suspected DUI collision early Sunday morning in the area of Santa Rosa, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at around 1:30 a.m. February 16, on southbound Highway 101 near Fulton Road.

As per the CHP officials, a 1997 Nissan Versa was travelling at a speed of more than 100 mph and it approached a patrol vehicle from behind. The patrol car was then rear-ended by the Nissan. Following the impact, the patrol car ended up on the right shoulder of the roadway while the Nissan rolled before coming into a halt with significant damage.

Responding emergency crews transported Officers Smith, the patrol’s unit driver, and Perez, the passenger, to  Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to moderate degree.

Authorities arrested the Nissan driver after determining that the Nissan driver was under the influence of alcohol.

An investigation is ongoing.
