Alpine, California (June 3, 2021)  – A fiery traffic collision has claimed the life of one person Thursday evening in Alpine and left three other people with serious injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.

The deadly crash happened at around 6:00 p.m. on westbound Interstate 8 near Tavern Road.

According to the CHP, a black Toyota Solara sedan collided with a black GMC Sierra pickup for undetermined reasons in the westbound lane of Interstate 8. Both vehicles rolled over after the impact.

The Solara reportedly came to rest in the dirt center median while the Sierra continued down an embankment before it came to a stop in the eastbound lanes.

Following the collision, at least one vehicle caught fire which spread to nearby brush, the CHP said.

As the Sierra was overturning, the rear-seat passenger was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, only identified as a female victim, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The male driver of the Solara, the male driver of the Sierra and his female front-seat passenger, were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego with major injuries.

One westbound lane and three eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 were shut down while the authorities conduct an investigation. It was not immediately clear if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

No further details about the crash were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
