Wyatt Phillips Injured in DUI Crash on Highway 101 in Willits
Wyatt Phillips, Covelo Man Injured in Willits Car Accident on Highway 101 at Willits Bypass; Brenton Michels Arrested
Willits, California (June 3, 2020) – Three people were injured Tuesday morning in an alleged DUI crash in Willits, according to California Highway Patrol.
The accident happened at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, on Highway 101 at Willits Bypass.
The CHP said a 1999 Honda Civic, driven by Brenton Michels, 32, of Kennewick, Washington, was heading southbound on Highway 101 when, for undetermined reasons, the Honda veered into oncoming traffic on the Willits Bypass and collided head-on with a Peterbilt cement truck, driven by Wyatt Phillips, 25, of Ukiah.
As a result of the collision, the cement truck overturned and partially spilled its load of concrete. A tire from the truck came off and hit a 2015 Subaru Legacy, driven by a 58-year-old Humboldt County man, that had been following the Honda and parked on the shoulder of the bypass.
The Honda came to a stop and blocked the southbound lane of the highway after the crash.
Phillips was transported to Howard Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries. A passenger in the Subaru, a 25-year-old Covelo man, also sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital.
Brenton Michels Arrested after Crash on Highway 101 in Willits
Michels was flown to Santa Rosa and then to Sacramento to be treated for major injuries before being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The bypass was shut down for several hours following the wreck. Traffic was being diverted through the city of Willits.
The accident remains under investigation.
