Galt, California (January 29, 2021) – A Walnut Grove man was killed after a train crashed into his vehicle early Thursday morning in Galt, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

The deadly train crash, which was reported at around 12:15 a.m., happened on Spring Street, just east of Saddle Crest Circle and west of Highway 99.

Authorities said a Union Pacific train was traveling westbound at approximately 50 miles per hour toward Twin Cities Road when the engineer saw a Chevrolet 2500 pickup that was heading westbound on Twin Cities Road.

As the pickup approached the crossing gates, the driver suddenly accelerated and attempted to go around the east side of the crossing gates to get over the railroad tracks.

The engineer tried to stop the train but was unsuccessful and hit the pickup.

The pickup driver, only identified as a 68-year-old Walnut Grove man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

No further details about the accident were immediately provided.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
