Palm Springs, California (May 1, 2019) – 60-Year-Old Thomas E. Cain has been identified as the suspected DUI driver who struck and injured a police officer in Palm Springs late Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 10:44 p.m. April 29, in the area Los Felices Road and San Rafael Drive.

The accident happened when a 2010 Subaru Impreza driven by Cain hit a Palm Springs police officer driving a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria Squad car west on San Rafael Road. Cain was traveling south on Los Felices Road when he failed to yield at a stop sign and entered the intersection without appropriate clearance.

The officer sustained unspecified injuries following the accident. The victim was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage as a result of the accident.

The CHP confirmed that Cain was intoxicated at the time of the collision. He was booked into the Riverside County Jail on suspicion of DUI.

The CHP is investigating the crash.
