Tanner Smith Injured in Bicycle Accident on Highway 101 in Smith River

Smith River, California (July 23, 2020) – The bicyclist who was struck and injured by a vehicle Thursday morning in Smith River has been identified as Tanner Smith.  

According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, the bicycle collision happened at around 11:02 a.m. on U.S. Highway 101 near Dr. Fine Bridge.  

Smith was riding his bicycle southbound on the south shoulder of U.S. Highway 101. At the same time, a 2019 Ford Fusion, driven by Jami Pfau, was heading southbound on U.S. Highway 101 approaching Smith, the CHP report states.  

For an undetermined reason, the Ford Fusion drifted onto the shoulder of the highway and hit Smith. After the impact, the Ford Fusion went up an embankment and rolled over onto the road.  

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and rendered aid to both victims. Smith sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for further treatment.  

Pfau was also taken to Sutter Coast Hospital with minor injuries.  

The CHP said neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the accident.  

The CHP is investigating the cause of the collision.
