Madera, California (April 13, 2020) – A woman was hit and killed by a car as she pushed a shopping cart on Sunday night in Madera.

The California Highway Patrol said the accident happened on Road 26 near Haley Way at about 10:30 p.m. April 12.

The 55-year-old Susanville woman was pushing the cart north across Road 26 when she was struck by a Kia.

CHP officers who responded to the incident found the unidentified woman down on the roadway.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Kia, 19-year-old Jose David Zaragoza of Madera, left the scene because he did not know he had hit a pedestrian.

He returned to the scene after noticing the damage on his car and cooperated with the authorities.

The investigators determined that the motorist was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was not booked on any charges.

No additional information about the accident was provided.
