Sonoma, California (January 27, 2020) – A 35-year-old man died, and his 34-year-old female passenger was airlifted to a hospital after a DUI driver crashed into their car Sunday afternoon at an intersection in Sonoma, authorities said.

The accident happened at about 12:20 p.m. when Adulhadi Awad, 36, ran a red light at 8th Street and East Napa Road.

The California Highway Patrol said Awad was driving a gray 2008 BMW southbound on 8th Street when he ran a red light and crashed into a Subaru.

The 35-year-old man driving the Subaru died in the accident. His passenger, Natalie Weiss, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

Police arrested Awad on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also injured in the crash and was being treated at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa.

Authorities said two motorcyclists who were waiting at the intersection were hit by debris but were not hurt.
