Santa Barbara, California (October 9, 2019) – A person was killed and several others were injured Wednesday afternoon in a traffic accident involving a bus in Santa Barbara, according to a local news report.

The deadly accident took place at about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Chapala Street and W. Figueroa Street.

According to police, one person was waiting at the bus stop when they were struck by an MTD bus near the bus center. The victim died at the scene.

A second person who was near the bus stop was taken to a hospital with major injuries.

Several people who were inside the bus sustained minor to moderate injuries. Two of them were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Witness told authorities that the bus was heading northbound on Chapala Street when it turned right onto Figueroa Street. For an unknown reason, the bus drove up onto the sidewalk and struck the two people before coming to a rest inside a city parking lot.

The operator of the bus stopped at the scene and cooperated with the police.  There are currently no indications of a health issue.

It’s undetermined if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Streets in the area were blocked, including northbound Chapala Street at Carrillo Street. W. Figueroa Street was also closed in the immediate vicinity of the accident.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
