San Diego, California (January 13, 2019) – One person was killed after a wrong-way collision Sunday afternoon near Downtown San Diego, according to a local news source.
The accident happened at 4:06 p.m. Sunday, on southbound 5 Freeway, just before Highway 163.
As per the report, a black Nissan Versa was reportedly traveling north in the southbound lanes when it crashed into a white minivan. The wrong-way driver suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The deceased name was not immediately released awaiting notification of next of kin.
The van driver was pinned inside the minivan, and he was extricated by responding firefighters. He complained of chest pain and a leg injury and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Officials said that one of the vehicles exploded following the collision.
Authorities closed three southbound lanes as a result of the crash. The lanes were re-opened a while after 6:30 p.m.
An investigation into this incident is underway.
