Hughson, California (June 25, 2021) –  The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Bureau has identified the man who died Wednesday afternoon following a head-on crash near the Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center in Hughson as Roy Gillespie, 22, of Sonora.

The incident took place just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, on Geer Road, just north of East Hatch Road.

The California Highway Patrol said Vidal Calderon, 61, of Delhi, was driving a 2005 Chevy pickup south on Geer Road when, for unknown reasons, he drifted to the right and crashed into a raised curb.

The pickup then swerved into the path of oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2013 Nissan sedan driven by Gillespie.

Gillespie died at the scene.

Calderon sustained major injuries and was transported to the Doctors Medical Center.

All parties involved in the crash were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Investigators believed alcohol or drugs did not play a role in the crash.

The incident remained under investigation.
