Santa Maria, California (October 8, 2019) – Authorities have identified the truck driver who died in a traffic accident that happened last week Friday afternoon in Orcutt as Rene Menjivar, 52, of Guadalupe.

The deadly crash happened at around noon Friday, October 4 on Highway 1  in front of the Rancho Maria Golf Club, just south of Black Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Menjivar was driving a Rancho Harvest Farms big rig loaded with celery northbound on the highway when a Toyota Avalon pulled out of the Rancho Maria Golf Course, directly into the front of it.

Menjivar swerved to avoid the Toyota, but lost control of the tractor-trailer and collided with the Toyota. Due to the impact of the crash, the big rig overturned.

A third vehicle,  a Volkswagen, traveling the opposite direction attempted to avoid the tractor-trailer and landed upside down in a ditch.

Menjivar suffered major head trauma and died at the scene.

Alan Bruce Durham, 66, of Arroyo Grande, who was the driver of the Toyota, was not injured.

Eric Pineda De Jesus, 20, and a passenger in the Volkswagen, Ricardo Zurita, 19, of Santa Maria, were also not injured in the crash.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered factors in the accident.

Highway 1 was closed for around five hours as the crews worked to clear the crash site.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
