Modesto, California (April 24, 2019) – Police officers have arrested 29-year-old Rafael Puerta in connection with an accident that left a woman seriously injured Sunday evening in Modesto, according to Modesto Police Department.

The crash was reported at about 5:00 p.m. April 21, on Coldwell Avenue and Ninth Street.

Police said a Jeep Cherokee was northbound on Ninth Street when it ran a red light and broadsided a Honda Civic which was west on Coldwell Avenue.

34-Year-Old Woman Hospitalized after Modesto Car Crash

The 34-year-old driver of the Honda was seriously injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Puerta, who earlier in the day allegedly stole the keys and Jeep, ran from the scene but bystanders chased him down and detained him until officers arrived.

Puerta was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and burglary, and charges related to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
