Gaviota, California (February 22, 2019) – A CHP officer and a civilian were hurt when a car slammed into a patrol vehicle near Gaviota on Thursday morning.

According to the CHP, the wreck happened at about 7:40 a.m. February 21 on Highway 101 near Highway 1.

The CHP said Officer F. Fernandez, 40, of Buellton, was driving a Dodge Charger patrol vehicle northbound on Highway 101 when he pulled over to the center divider to wait for traffic to break. The officer had the amber lights on waiting to respond to two separate accidents and as he pulled to the center divider, the patrol car was nearly hit by a Ford F-250 pickup truck. The pickup was southbound on the highway and spun out into the center divider.

Virginia Yan, 25, of San Luis Obispo, was driving a southbound 2007 Toyota Yaris and also spun out of control and slammed into the patrol vehicle.

Yan and Officer Hernandez were injured. Yan complained of pain in her left knee while the officer suffered injuries to his hands, back and legs.

The authorities are investigating the collision.
