Salinas, California (September 26, 2019) – A woman was killed in a train accident Wednesday afternoon in Monterey County, according to the CHP.

The tragic wreck took place shortly after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25 near state Highway 183 at McFadden Road, just west of Salinas.

The California Highway Patrol said the woman was driving a flatbed truck across the tracks at an unmarked crossing on a private road on private property when she was hit by a Union Pacific train.

Authorities said the woman was not aware the train was approaching before crossing the tracks. The crossing did have stop signs.

The woman died in the crash. Her name has not been disclosed pending notification of family.

The truck was carrying equipment from one agricultural field to another.

No one was injured in the train. Authorities said around 50-to-100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled parallel to the tracks and a hazmat crew was at the crash site to clean up.

The accident caused traffic congestion in the area for at least two hours.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
