Monterey, CA: Fatal DUI Crash on State Highway 1, March 5

Monterey, California (March 6, 2019) – One person was killed in an alleged DUI crash Tuesday evening in Monterey, authorities said.

The horrific accident occurred at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 on state Highway 1.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2002 GMC Sierra driven by Stewart Maxwell Napier, 25, of Pacific Grove, was traveling northbound on state Highway 1 when it hit a 1999 Chevrolet Tracker.

The Chevrolet Tracker caught fire after the impact. Witnesses tried to break the vehicle’s windows and extricate an occupant, but the car was engulfed in flames. That person died in the accident.

The name of the deceased victim has not been disclosed pending identification and notification of family.

A Jeep Patriot was also involved in the accident, but its occupants were unhurt.

Napier, who was not injured, was arrested on suspicion of two felonies, DUI involving drugs and vehicular manslaughter, in addition to misdemeanors of violating probation and possessing narcotics. He was booked into Monterey County jail with bail set at $20,000.

The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
