1 Killed, 3 Injured in Merced County Car Accident at Shaffer Road and Mercedes Avenue
Merced County, California (January 10, 2019) – One person was killed and three other people were injured Thursday morning in a head-on collision at an intersection north of Atwater, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
At about 6:00 a.m., the CHP officers received a report regarding a traffic crash at the intersection of Shaffer Road and Mercedes Avenue.
The CHP said an SUV was heading northbound on Shaffer Road in Dense fog when its driver decided to overtake a car in front. The SUV then drifted into the southbound lane where it collided head-on with another vehicle driven by a 65-year-old man.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene while his three passengers were taken to a hospital in unknown condition.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the accident.
According to the CHP, Shaffer Road was shut down as emergency crews worked to the clear the scene.
CHP is investigating the accident.
