Maria Martinez Ramirez ID’d as Woman Killed in Fresno County Crash on Highway 41 and Harlan Avenue near Caruthers

Fresno County, California (August 4, 2019) – The woman who was killed Friday night in a head-on collision at an intersection in Fresno County has been identified by authorities as Maria Martinez Ramirez, 20, of Fort Smith. She was a Northside graduate and UAFS student.
The fatal accident took place at about 8:50 p.m. Friday, August 2 on Highway 41 and Harlan Avenue near Caruthers.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Ramirez was driving a gray Kia Sportage (midsize SUV) when she tried to make a legal passing on the two-lane highway and collided head-on with another vehicle of unspecified type and built. A family of four was riding in the second vehicle.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Good Samaritan who witnessed the crash pulled over to assist the crash victims. She was then struck by another car, which ended up colliding head-on with an 18-wheeler.
The Good Samaritan was taken to a hospital with major injuries.
The family of four was also taken to the hospital for treatment minor-to-major injuries. Three of them were children aged between 6 and 15.
Highway 41 was closed in both directions following the crash.
No other information was immediately disclosed.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
