Porterville, California (June 8, 2021) – Authorities have identified the off-duty pilot who died after a single-engine plane crashed Monday afternoon at an airport in Porterville as Lt. Col. Billy ‘Taz’ Sullivan.

The deadly crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. Monday 7 at the Porterville Municipal Airport near Road 232.

Authorities said the plane, described as a single-engine Vans RV-6A, had just taken off from the airport when it went down near one end of the runway and caught fire.

Sullivan, who was the sole occupant of the plane, died in the crash.

The airport was closed for several hours during the investigation. The FAA determined that the pilot was attempting to return to the airport when the accident occurred.

No further details about the crash were immediately provided.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the accident.
