Lorena Higuera Killed in Wrong-Way Collision on Interstate 5 in Del Mar
Lorena Higuera ID’d as Woman Killed in Del Mar Crash on Interstate 5 near Carmel Valley Road
San Diego County, California (June 4, 2021) – The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Bureau has identified the woman who died early Tuesday morning following a wrong-way head-on crash in the Del Mar area as Lorena Higuera, 52, of Long Beach.
The deadly accident happened at around 12:49 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, on the southbound side of Interstate 5, just north of Carmel Valley Road.
Authorities said a Dodge Magnum, driven by a 42-year-old man, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when it collided head-on with a white Honda Civic.
The Dodge then hit a Ford pickup truck, driven by a 32-year-old man.
Deadly Wrong-Way, Head-On Crash in Carmel Valley
Higuera, who was riding as a passenger in the front seat of the Honda, was declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda and another passenger were transported to a hospital with major injuries. The drivers of the Dodge and the Ford also sustained major injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The on-ramp from Carmel Valley to southbound Interstate 5 was closed while southbound traffic was diverted to State Route 56. As of 6:00 a.m., all the lanes were reopened to traffic.
Further details regarding the crash were not immediately provided.
