Man Killed, Woman Severely Hurt after DUI Gardena Crash at Artesia Boulevard and Normandie Avenue; Jonathan Salazar Arrested

Gardena, California (December 23, 2019) – 24-year-old Jonathan Salazar has been arrested after a deadly collision that left a man dead, a woman severely hurt early Sunday morning in the area of Gardena, according to authorities.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision happened at around 4:41 a.m. Sunday, December 22, at Artesia Boulevard and Normandie Avenue.
Officials said Salazar, a Vista resident, was driving a black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution eastbound on Artesia Boulevard when for unknown reasons he crashed into the back of a gray Honda Civic heading in the same direction.
The Honda continued driving into the junction before crashing into a traffic signal in the center divider.
It was reported that during the crash, a small folding ladder in the Honda struck the back of either the head or neck of a man riding in the front passenger seat.
Responding emergency crews found the man lying in the roadway next to the Honda. The man was declared dead at the crash site.
The female Honda driver suffered severe injuries and was taken to UCLA Medical Center for treatment.
The names of the man and the woman were not immediately released.
Authorities arrested Salazar on suspicion of DUI and other felony offenses with a bail set at $100,000.
