Passenger Killed, Irfan Sarwar Arrested after Yreka Car Accident on Interstate 5 near Montague Road
Yreka, California (January 8, 2021) – Irfan Sarwar has been arrested after a DUI car accident that killed his passenger in Yreka early Thursday morning, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, January 7, on Interstate 5, just south of Montague Road.
The CHP said Sarwar was driving a Toyota Prius southbound on Interstate 5 at a posted speed between 70 and 75 miles per hour when he allowed the vehicle to drift off the west edge of the roadway.
The Prius continued westbound and traveled across a nearby on-ramp, where it collided with a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder.
Deadly Crash on Interstate 5 in Yreka
Paramedics responded to the scene and performed CPR on a passenger in the Prius. Despite life-saving measures, the passenger did survive his injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Sarwar was transported to Fairchild Medical Center to be treated for major injuries before being arrested on suspicion of DUI.
The operator of the big rig was asleep at the time of the accident and was not injured in the crash.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
