Gregory Byrd Dies Nearly 2 Weeks after Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on 710 Freeway in Carmel Valley
Gregory Byrd Killed in Carmel Valley Crash on Interstate 5 near Carmel Valley Road

San Diego County, California (June 16, 2021) – Gregory Wayne Byrd, 43, of Alabama died nearly two weeks after a wrong-way collision that also killed a woman near Carmel Valley on June 1, according to the authorities.
The incident took place at about 12:49 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5, just north of Carmel Valley Road.
According to CHP, Byrd was driving a Dodge Magnum northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when he collided head-on with an oncoming white Honda Civic.
The Dodge was then hit by a Ford pickup truck that was being driven by a 32-year-old man.

A passenger in the front seat of the Honda, Lorena Higuera, 52, of Long Beach, died at the scene of the collision.
The Honda’s driver and another passenger in the vehicle were taken to a hospital with major injuries.
Byrd and the driver of the Ford also sustained major injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office said that Byrd succumbed to his injuries at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla 13 days after the collision.
The crash remains under investigation.
