Fresno County, California (January 2, 2021) – Authorities are investigating a fiery Friday night head-on crash that killed seven children and two adults in Fresno County.

The deadly two-vehicle accident happened at about 8:00 p.m., on Highway 33, just south of Sutter Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2013 Dodge, driven by a 28-year-old man from Avenal, was headed southbound on Highway 33 when it swerved onto the western dirt shoulder.

The Avenal man then overcorrected, and the Dodge went back across the southbound lanes and into the northbound lanes, where it crashed head-on into a 2007 Ford, operated by a woman, the officials said.

As a result of the collision, the Dodge came to a stop in the highway’s northbound and southbound lanes. The Ford came to a stop in the eastern dirt shoulder, where it caught fire.

First responders arrived at the scene and contained the flames. There were eight occupants in the Ford.

The female driver of the Dodge and seven children sustained fatal injuries in the accident.

The 28-year-old male driver was also killed in the accident.

It was not clear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the mishap.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
