Eugene Harbrecht Killed in Fiery Street-Racing Crash at Bristol Street and Santa Clara Avenue in Santa Ana
Eugene Harbrecht ID’d as Innocent Driver Killed in Santa Ana Car Accident at Bristol Street and Santa Clara Avenue
Santa Ana, California (July 30, 2020) – The driver who died in a traffic crash suspected to have been caused by street racing on Thursday afternoon in Santa Ana has been identified as Eugene Harbrecht, 67, of Santa Ana. He was a longtime newspaper editor for the Orange County Register.
The fatal crash occurred at around 12:15 p.m. at the intersection of Bristol Street and Santa Clara Avenue.
Police said a BMW and a black Infiniti were racing each other northbound on Bristol Street when the BMW collided with a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was making a left turn onto southbound Bristol Street from Santa Clara Avenue.
As a result of the collision, the pickup truck skidded 60 to 70 feet into a wall and landed on its side. It then burst into flames.
Harbrecht was pulled out of the wreckage by bystanders.
Harbrecht, who was the driver of the pickup truck, was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the BMW was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries.
Authorities later tracked down the driver of the black Infiniti and booked him into custody.
Th intersection was closed following the accident.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
