Oxnard, California (July 8, 2021) – The bicycle rider who died in a crash involving an Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train in downtown Oxnard on Tuesday morning has been identified by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office as Esau C. Castaneda, 31, of Oxnard.

According to the authorities, the accident occurred at around 11:09 p.m. July 6, near the Oxnard Transit Center at Fourth and Meta streets.

Authorities said Castaneda was riding his bike on the tracks when he was struck by the train. The train’s conductor reportedly sounded the horn multiple times but Castaneda remained on the tracks.

Castaneda was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No one on the train was injured but the train was delayed for nearly three hours for the investigation.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
