Butte County, California (January 4, 2019) – The man who was struck and killed by a vehicle early Thursday morning in Cana, north of Chico has been identified by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office as David Houck, 54, of Corning.

The deadly accident occurred around 5:50 a.m. Thursday, January 3 on Highway 99 near Hamilton Nord Highway.

According to the CHP, Houck was walking very close to the white line on the west side of Highway 99 when for reasons still under investigation he jumped in front of an oncoming white car.

Houck was pronounced dead at the scene. According to witnesses, the driver was not able to avoid striking the man.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the collision.  The crash remains under investigation.

The law requires drivers to slow down and give the right of way to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks.

Investigators will inspect the vehicle involved for mechanical issues or system failure and analyze photographs of the site of the crash. They will also determine if the driver was intoxicated as at the time of the accident.

The final results of the case will determine if a family member may have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit and receive compensation.
