Cole DeBortoli Dies in Santa Barbara Crash on Highway 154

Santa Barbara, California (April 11, 2020) – The man who was killed Thursday evening in an alleged DUI car accident in Santa Barbara has been identified as Cole DeBortoli, 21, of Santa Barbara.

The deadly accident took place at around 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9 on Highway 154 near Painted Cave Road.

According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, a Mazda 3 and a Toyota 4-Runner collided on Highway 154 in unclear circumstances.

DeBortoli, who was riding as a right-front passenger in the Mazda, sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash. He was rushed to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Two occupants of the 4-runner sustained minor injuries.

The Mazda’s driver, Brian Watana Dul, 22, of Goleta, was also transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with moderate injuries.  Authorities later arrested him on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

The accident remains under investigation.
