Newport Beach, California (September 9, 2020) – The pedestrian who died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Sunday morning in Newport Beach has been identified as Cleusa M. Coffman, 72, of Newport Beach.

The deadly pedestrian crash happened at about 6:53 a.m.Sunday, September 6, at the intersection of Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue.

Authorities said Ali Zohair Fakhreddine, 31, was driving his vehicle on Irvine Avenue when he allegedly ran a red light and struck Coffman, who was walking her dog through the intersection in a crosswalk.

Cleusa Coffman  Dies in Deadly Hit-and-Run Accident in Newport Beach 

Coffman and the dog died at the scene. 

Fakhreddine did not stop to render aid to the victims and fled the scene. Authorities later found him with his 2014 Hyundai about three hours later. The vehicle had damage consistent with the collision.

Fakhreddine was eventually arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
