Sacramento, California (July 4, 2021) – The Sacramento County Coroner’s Bureau has identified the scooter rider who died after being struck vehicle early Saturday morning in Sacramento as Carlos Chavez, 21, of Sacramento.

The deadly crash happened just before 3:00 a.m. Saturday, July 3, in the northbound lane of Capital City Freeway, just south of the American River Bridge. Capital City Freeway is also known as Business 80.

Authorities said Chavez was riding an electric rental scooter northbound on Capital City Freeway when he was hit by a Nissan Altima traveling northbound on Capital City Freeway, driven by a 31-year-old Sacramento man.

The Altima driver told authorities that Chavez rode the scooter in front of him, and the vehicle struck it.

Moments later, Chavez was struck by a Toyota 4Runner that was traveling northbound on Capital City Freeway towards Thunder Valley Casino. The driver called the authorities to report hitting an unknown object in the roadway.

Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is undetermined if drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.

The accident remains under investigation.
