Palmdale, California (May 7, 2021) – Bertha Smith, 66, of Palmdale, and Inga Smith, 47, of Palmdale, were among 5 people injured in a fatal multi-vehicle accident on 50th Street East in the Palmdale area Thursday morning, according to CHP.

The tragic accident took place at about 3:50 a.m. May 6, just north of Avenue P.

CHP said Michael Reinert, 52, of Lancaster, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban southbound on 50th Street East when, for undetermined reasons, he let his vehicle swerve into the opposing lanes, sideswiping a northbound 2020 Chevrolet Malibu.

The Malibu was being driven by Lurlene Smith, 68, of Palmdale; who had Bertha, Inga, and Mac Smith, 64, of Lancaster, as her passengers.

After the crash, the Malibu came to a rest facing west in the southbound lanes and it was struck on its right side by a southbound 2011 Toyota Yaris driven by Richard Gomez, 32, of Lancaster.

Bertha Smith and Inga Smith Injured in Deadly Palmdale Accident 

The accident killed Mac, who was in the front passenger seat of the Malibu.

Lurlene, Bertha and Inga were taken to Antelope Valley Hospital with major injuries.

Gomez also sustained major injuries and was flown to Antelope Valley Hospital.

Reinert was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital with moderate injuries. 

The crash is under investigation by the CHP.
