Edgar Cruz Among 4 Injured in Interstate 5 Accident near Flores Avenue in Tehama County
Tehama County, California (June 13, 2019) – One of the four people who were hospitalized Monday morning after a big rig accident in Tehama County has been identified as Edgar Rodriguez Cruz, 62, of Livingston, according to a local news source.
The crash happened just before 11:45 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5, just north of Flores Avenue and involved three big rigs and a passenger vehicle.
Authorities said a vehicle was heading north on Interstate 5 when, for an unknown reason, it burst into flames. As vehicles starting slowing down for the crash, a 2015 Freightliner big rig failed to slow in time and rear-ended a 2017 Freightliner hauling a box trailer.
The crash caused a domino reaction which pushed the 2017 Freightliner into a stopped 2013 Freightliner big rig hauling a flat-bed trailer.
Edgar Cruz Injured in Big Rig Crash on I-5 in Tehama County
Cruz was the driver of the 2013 Freightliner. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital.
The driver of the 2015 Freightliner sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Redding.
The driver and passenger of the 2017 Freightliner were taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital with minor injuries.
The northbound lanes of the freeway were shut down following the crash. As of 1:15 p.m., the freeway was partially reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
