Delano, California (June 23, 2021) – Gabriel Diaz, 52, of Lamont, suffered serious injuries Tuesday afternoon after being involved in a deadly two-car collision east of Delano, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported to the CHP at about 3:57 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, on Highway 65 at Highway 155.

According to the CHP, Diaz was driving southbound on Highway 65 at a speed of more than 55 miles per hour when, for an unknown reason, he allowed his gray Honda Accord to drift across the double yellow lines and into the opposite lane.

A 2021 Nissan traveling northbound on Highway 65 swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the Honda but was not successful. The left front side of the Nissan impacted with the left front of the Honda.

After the collision, the Nissan came to a stop in a dirt field east of the roadway while the Honda stopped facing southbound in the northbound lane.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and extricated Diaz from the wreckage. He was then airlifted to Kern Medical with major injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, only identified as a 31-year-old Porterville woman, was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Both drivers wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision. Authorities said neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the crash.

Further details about the crash were not immediately provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
