Gina Santos Injured in Head-On Collision on Highway 59 in Merced County
38-Year-Old Gina Santos Seriously Injured in Merced County Crash on Highway 59 near Sandy Mush Road
Merced County, California (June 9, 2021) – Gina Mendoza Santos, 38, of Fresno, was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a head-on crash in Merced County, authorities said.
The major injury collision, which involved a sedan and a big rig, was reported at around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, on Highway 59, just south of Sandy Mush Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Barboza was driving a 2014 Freightliner northbound on Highway 59 when, for undetermined reasons, he allowed the big rig to drift across the center median and collided head-on with an oncoming 2015 Toyota Camry, operated by Santos, the CHP said.
The Toyota acquired major damage upon the impact.
Major Injury Traffic Collision in Merced County
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and extricated Santos who was trapped in the wreckage. She was then airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of major injuries. However, her current condition was unknown.
Barboza complained of pain after the crash but did not need hospitalization.
Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the crash.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
