Sutter County, California (April 28, 2021) – A head-on collision has claimed the life of a man Monday afternoon in Sutter County and left two other people with injuries, authorities said.

The deadly crash happened at about 4:10 p.m. Monday, April 26, on Highway 20 near West Butte Road.

According to the authorities, a 47-year-old Gold Run man was driving a Ford Escape westbound on Highway 20 when he tried to pass other vehicles at a high rate of speed.

For an unknown reason, the Ford Escape collided head-on with a Toyota Tacoma that was heading eastbound on Highway 20 at 55 mph.

A Subaru Forester, which the Ford Escape passed at first, slammed into the debris from the crash.

Deadly Car Accident on Highway 20 in Sutter County

The driver of the Ford Escape was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.

The Toyota driver sustained major injuries that included a broken left leg and head trauma while his passenger suffered a laceration to the head and body pains. Both patients were transported to Adventist Health/ Rideout for treatment.

Authorities later determined that the Toyota driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He was ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The CHP is investigating the accident.
