Manuel Hernandez Seriously Injured in Sutter County Head-On Crash on Highway 20 near West Butte Road
Sutter County, California (April 28, 2021) – Manuel Rivas Hernandez, 37, of Live Oak, was seriously injured after being involved in a deadly car crash in Sutter County Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The wreck occurred at about 4:10 p.m. Monday, April 26, on Highway 20 near West Butte Road.
A Ford Escape was heading westbound on Highway 20 when it tried to pass other vehicles at a high rate of speed, the authorities said.
For an unknown reason, the Ford Escape collided head-on with a Toyota Tacoma that was heading eastbound on Highway 20 at 55 mph.
A Subaru Forester, passed by the Ford Escape at first, crashed into the debris from the crash.
The driver of the Ford Escape, a 47-year-old Gold Run man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Hernandez, who was the Toyota driver, was taken to Adventist Health/ Rideout with major injuries, including a broken left leg and head trauma. His passenger was also hospitalized with a laceration to the head and body pains.
Authorities later determined that Hernandez was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of DUI.
The CHP is investigating the accident.
