Tustin, California (April 20, 2021) – Authorities have identified the man who died Sunday morning following an alleged DUI crash in Tustin as David Kawashima, 62, of Orange.
At about 8:45 a.m. Sunday, April 18, officers of the Tustin Police Department were dispatched to the 2800 block of Park Avenue in response to a driver found unresponsive in a drive-through.
Upon arrival at the scene, the driver sped off in the vehicle that was later reported stolen.
The driver, later identified as Pedro Pantoja Jr., 29, of Diamond Bar, was heading northbound on Jamboree Road when he crashed into another vehicle.
Kawashima, who was in the second vehicle, died at the scene. Pantoja and his female passenger were transported to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.
Pantoja was later arrested and booked into custody on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, causing injury to his passenger while driving under the influence, vehicle theft, parole violation and evading a police officer.
