Lake County, California (February 4, 2021) – The woman who died last month following a traffic accident involving an off-road vehicle in Lake County has been identified as Athena Karan, 19, of Santa Rosa.

The deadly accident happened at around 4:33 p.m. Saturday, January 16 at the Indian Valley Reservoir, near Clear Lake.

Authorities said Juan Torres, 28, was driving his 2019 Honda Talon off-highway vehicle in an easterly direction in the Indian Valley Reservoir area when he went over a large dip in the roadway, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which overturned.

Karan, who was sitting in the lap of another passenger, was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Torres was arrested on suspicion of two felonies: gross vehicular manslaughter and causing injury while driving under the influence of alcohol.

The crash remains under investigation.
