Madera, California (September 24, 2020) – Authorities have identified the woman who died in a traffic accident Saturday evening in Madera as Katrina Wood, 30, of Chowchilla.

The deadly crash happened at around 6:00 p.m. Saturday, September 19, on State Route 99, just south of Avenue 17.

According to the authorities, a 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, driven by Wood, was traveling northbound on State Route 99 at an unknown speed when it lost control and went across both lanes before it crashed into the concrete center divider.

The Mitsubishi then bounced back across the highway and hit a 2017 Toyota, driven by a couple also from Chowchilla. The force of the impact caused the Toyota to spin into a wooden sign post and the Mitsubishi to roll over.

Deadly Madera Car Crash on State Route 99

Wood, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The couple in the Toyota was uninjured.

Traffic was halted for several hours while the investigation and cleanup took place. Authorities believed speed played a role in the crash.

It is undetermined whether intoxication also played a role in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
