Man, Woman Killed in Atwater Crash on Santa Fe Drive and Spaceport Entry
Atwater, California (June 26, 2021) – Two people were killed Friday night in an alleged DUI crash in Atwater, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The fatal crash occurred at around 9:43 p.m. Friday, June 25 on Santa Fe Drive and Spaceport Entry.
According to the CHP, a 56-year old Merced woman was driving a 2012 Honda westbound on Santa Fe Drive when, for an unknown reason, her vehicle was struck from behind by a 2012 Lexus ES350, operated by King Vanga, 20, of Atwater.
After the impact, the Honda spun out of control in the eastbound lanes and caught fire while the Lexus crashed through a chain-link fence and flipped over.

The driver of the Honda and her passenger, a 56-year-old man, also from Merced, were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency responders. Sadly, both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Vanga sustained moderate injuries in the crash.
Authorities later determined that Vanga was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Vanga was ultimately arrested and booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
