Zanhi Williams ID’d as Man Killed in Bakersfield Train Accident on Edison Highway near Fairfax Road
Bakersfield, California (August 6, 2020) – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the driver who died when his car was hit by a train Wednesday morning in East Bakersfield as Zanhi Williams, 21, of Bakersfield.
Authorities said a silver Nissan, driven by Williams, was traveling eastbound on Edison Highway near Fairfax Road when it was hit by a BNSF train going eastbound.
A preliminary investigation by the California Highway Patrol revealed that the car attempted to pass another vehicle at around 11:00 a.m. August 5 at a high rate of speed when Williams lost control. The vehicle veered onto the shoulder and onto the railroad tracks where it was hit by the train.
Williams and his girlfriend, Bonnie Jeban, 21, were ejected from the vehicle upon the impact.
Williams died at the scene while Jeban was taken to Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
There were no other details available.
CHP is investigating.
