Zakarius Brown Killed in DUI Crash on Highway 99 in Galt
Zakarius Brown ID’d as Passenger Killed in Galt Crash on Highway 99 near Central Galt Off-Ramp

Galt, California (February 13, 2021) – The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified the passenger who died Thursday night following an alleged DUI car accident in Galt as Zakarius Brown, 40.
The deadly crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, February 12, on Highway 99, just north of the Central Galt exit.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Jonathan Ratta, 28, of Lathrop, was driving a white BMW northbound on Highway 99 at a speed of approximately 80 to 90 miles per hour when, for unknown reasons, he crashed into a center divider.
The BMW reportedly skidded sideways across both northbound lanes and drifted off the east side of the highway. It then went up an embankment and struck a tree before overturning.
Deadly Car Accident on Highway 99 in Galt
Brown, who was riding as a passenger in the BMW, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, authorities said.
Another passenger in the BMW, a 27-year-old man from Lexington Hills, North Carolina, was transported to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center with minor injuries.
Ratta fled the scene but was later arrested. Authorities determined that Ratta was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.
Ratta was eventually booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
The accident remains under investigation.
