52-Year-Old Woman Dies, 4 Seriously Injured in Carmel Valley Crash on Interstate 5 near Carmel Mountain Road

San Diego, California (June 1, 2021) – A wrong-way head-on crash has claimed the life of a 52-year-old woman early Tuesday morning in the Carmel Valley area and left four other people with serious injuries, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly accident happened just before 12:50 a.m. on the southbound side of Interstate 5 near Carmel Mountain Road.
CHP said a Dodge Magnum, driven by a 42-year-old man, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when it collided head-on with a white Honda Civic.
The Dodge then hit a Ford pickup truck, driven by a 32-year-old man.
Deadly Wrong-Way, Head-On Crash in Carmel Valley
A 52-year-old woman, who was riding as a passenger in the Honda, was declared dead at the scene. Her name has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Honda and another passenger were transported to a hospital with major injuries. The drivers of the Dodge and the Ford also sustained major injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The on-ramp from Carmel Valley to southbound Interstate 5 was closed while southbound traffic was diverted to State Route 56. As of 6:00 a.m., all the lanes were reopened to traffic.
Further details regarding the crash were not immediately provided.
