Whittier, California (February 19, 2019) – A driver died after a police pursuit ended in a crash on Monday morning in Uptown Whittier, according to the Whittier Police Department.

The incident took place at about 11:00 a.m. February 18, on Newlin Avenue and Wardman Street.

Authorities said officers spotted an alleged incident of road rage and attempted to pull over the driver involved in the area of Whittier Boulevard and Greenleaf Avenue. The driver refused to stop, initiating a chase through the streets of Whittier.

The pursuit came to an end when the suspect struck another vehicle at Newline Avenue and Wardman Street. The impact caused the suspect’s car to catch fire.

Police said the suspect jumped out of the burning car and tried to escape but the police caught him. He was detained at the hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle struck by the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Police did not release the identity of the victim.

The crash is under investigation.
